Could the smell of formaldehyde cause indigestion?

formaldehyde

For my lab at school, we’re examining specimens that have been treated with formaldehyde. After each of my labs I’ve noticed that i get indigestion or at least something that feels an awful lot like it. My symptoms last for 1-2 days after my lab.

Formaldehyde is no longer commonly used in the united states. Older specimen may still use it and specimen from other countries such as sharks often still use it. The problem is that formaldehyde is toxic and there are far better agents available on the market to so. So that being said, you may be more sensitive to it then others. It is more likely that you are having an irritation in your lungs. But it is possible for it to cause indigestion symptoms, especially if emotionally the experience is slightly upsetting. This can cause some stomach reactions.

What I would do is try to take breaks, go outside and get some fresh air. You can also try wearing a simple surgical mask. I don’t remember the size of a formaldehyde particle, but it may help.

    Good luck!
