Some people seem not to be affected by asbestos exposure, but those who are can be very VERY seriously affected, often years later. I do not know of any way that you can tell, now, which class you would fall into. It may not be a gamble you want to take.

I did a lot of asbestos removal when I was an apprentice back in the early 70’s and was not diagnosed with anything. It is now illegal to do this type of removal without a license. You cannot dispose of the material in a landfill either. It must be put in special plastic bags marked with the word Asbestos on it. The fines are quite high.

Neither I or anyone I know have shown any health issues YET
after having casually worked
(no PPE (personal protective equipment))
around asbestos products
(pipe insulation, automotive brake linings, valve packing)
for 40+yrs. *knock on wood*
Yeah I know – not real bright…
Regardless of health issues, working w/asbestos in the US is now a highly regulated (and costly) ordeal.
Your health is your decision… choose wisely…

It is all about exposure. If you work in the asbestos factory for 30 years 50 hours a week chances are you will have problems. If you purchased a home with 16 feet of one pipe wrapped with it, I would remove it myself and save a ton of cash. All you need to do is wear a good respirator (not those 15 cent paper ones) and get a spray bottle with water. soak the material with the spray bottle (This will keep the dust to a minimum) and take it down with as little disturbance as possible. I’m sure several people will tell you not to do it this way, but thier not the ones paying the bill. You probably get exposed to more serious health threats everyday of your life, just in going outside or to work.
