If asbestos is not reactive with the body why does it caus cancer?

Asbestos is something that is breathed into the lungs and that’s where it causes cancer.

It then triggers something within the lungs which causes cancer, which is impossible to treat.
Nobody yet knows why it takes such a large amount of time before it causes cancer, and as far as I know, it’s impossible to treat.
Unfortunately though, theres still many buildings with asbestos within them, including state schools, which the Government don’t appear to be doing anything about.
