Just make sure that he goes once a year for a chest xray. You have to inhale a lot of asbestos and for many years to develop cancer

Your concerns would be mesothelioma or asbestosis. You can read about them here:

IF it’s job related then he needs to notify his supervisor. Dealing with asbestos in the U.S. must follow certain protocols. It is a workers compensation issue that he needs to report this. Also, they are responsible that any work related exposure be evaluated. It does take consistent exposure for years usually to develop asbestos related illness and it isn’t likely in a day. However, other things mixed in with the asbestos may be involved including fiberglass fibers which use to have me coughing up a mess. Back then masks were not required for handling fiberglass insulation. Now it is.

A bad cough might be a good thing, or it might be unrelated.

It’s cold and flu season, so that may be the source of the cough.

Or if it’s related to the fibers, it could be his lungs trying to expel what he inhaled. Better that his body get rid of them than to hold onto them.

Is he sure it’s asbestos? Or could it have been fiberglass? That is an extreme irritant to skin and lungs.

Asbestos exposure can lead to mesothelioma, but it’s often 30-50 years after exposure.

If you are asking if you should be suspicious of cancer right now because he is coughing, the answer is no. Cancer does not develop overnight. Mesothelioma takes about 25 years to manifest and it can occur from a single exposure to asbestos. Once you have inhaled it there is nothing you can do about it.
